Careers at Zeroed-In
Financial Due Diligence (FDD) Managing Director
US-Based (Los Angeles / Southern California preferred)
Who Are We?
Zeroed-In Consulting is a boutique accounting advisory firm, founded in 2021 and with a team of 8 professionals, most with prior firm Top 10 firm public accounting experience. That sounds like the norm for most boutique accounting firms; but we aim to be anything but. Our expertise isn’t in common services like taxes and bookkeeping. We focus instead on specialized and complex/challenging areas of accounting advisory, including:
- US GAAP Technical Accounting: Helping clients navigate complex accounting evaluations and memos.
- Audit Prep: Supporting clients through their requests and conversations with their auditors, often during high-pressure and low-bandwidth periods.
- Controllership: Advising and building a strong accounting/finance function for early-stage clients, or those with a gap in their accounting leadership.
- Digital Transformation: Using the latest technology, such as automation and AI, to create efficient accounting processes that save time and increase accuracy.
- Financial Due Diligence: Detailed research and cleanup of accounting records, including Quality of Earnings, to help a client maximize their value in an exit (sell-side) or ensure an acquisition target is worthwhile (buy-side).
Why Us?
- We Thrive in the Mess: Many firms avoid companies with messy accounting records; those are our favorite clients. We work best with high-growth businesses often reaching debt or equity fundraising of $10M+. This is often when they reach requirements for more complex US GAAP accounting, and robust month-end closes, while having a small accounting team that is stretched thin. Auditors, CFOs, and Controllers bring us in when there are accounting fires to be put out. And we always rise to the challenge.
- Our Culture: Technical areas like US GAAP and accounting processes often bring an image of quiet, analytical accountants who prefer to work off-camera and in silos. That’s not us. We aim to build a team of fun-loving and motivated professionals who enjoy solving problems, adding value, and building relationships with our clients, and with each other. We’re sharp, fast-moving, and resourceful. A typical ZI conversation focuses less on the ins-and-outs of accounting, and more on topics like recent travel/trips and outdoor activities. A team member once called us a bunch of “cool nerds,” and honestly, we’re into it.
- Technology & AI: We’ve all heard about new developments in technology and AI. Most people in accounting/finance aren’t sure how to apply it, and many even try to avoid it. We’re on the other end of that spectrum. ZI’s mission is to lean into technology to make accounting easier for our team and our clients, and we’re working with the latest tools to make that happen. Team members are given subscriptions to tools like ChatGPT and Claude and are expected to dive into new ways to use it. This has led us to solutions that save time and increase accuracy in our projects, and we’re not stopping there. We embrace a culture of experimentation. Failure isn’t penalized, but a lack of trying is.
- Work-Life Balance: We strive for a new way of working for our team members, away from the traditional firm model of heavy hours and burnout. We don’t want our team members to work more than 40 hours a week, and we practice what we preach. Unlimited PTO with an average of 7 weeks per person, a fully remote work environment, and flexibility on when and how you work. What we ask in return is that you bring your A-game to work: jumping on client requests with your assigned time, and supporting team members on other projects and internal initiatives outside of that. But when you take your time off, enjoy it; you won’t be hearing from us.
Truth is, we’re not for everyone, and that’s okay. Many may read this and feel it’s not for them; no harm done. But if you’re reading this and feel like we’re your people, then I look forward to your application and can’t wait to share more of the ZI experience with you.
Who Do We Need?
- Zeroed-In Consulting started its Financial Due Diligence (FDD) services a few years ago. With the help of multiple team members and contractors, it’s grown into success for ourselves and our clients, and we see continued momentum in our pipeline and beyond.
- We’re now looking for an experienced Transaction Advisory professional to join on a full-time basis, as a leader to build out a strong and sustainable FDD practice.
- Like everything else we do, this FDD practice is intended to be different from others. We aim to be a premium but cost-effective provider compared to large firms, with tailored solutions that avoid unnecessary deliverables, and with a roadmap focused on utilizing AI/automation to significantly reduce our time and cost of delivery.
What Do We Need?
Specifically, we’re looking for a Managing Director (or experienced Director) with the following:
- US-based, ideally in the Los Angeles / Southern California area.
- 7+ years of Transaction Advisory experience
- Confidence/ability to scope, propose, and execute on QoE projects, from initial intro to final delivery.
- Interest in strategy and business development, though you’ll be supported by ZI leadership with our current BD strategy and guidance.
- Major interest in the use of AI and automation tools. This is a non-negotiable.
- Our top candidates will be those that come with an experienced discussion of AI models and recent/current use cases they’ve tried with it.
- Being aware of the tech, but without in-depth interest, just won’t cut it.
- Fearlessness in building a practice from the ground up. This won’t happen overnight, and you’re going to make mistakes. The leader that we’re looking for will try new things, fail at some, but own and learn from their mistakes to come out better on the other side.
