Most Finance Teams Only See One Side of Their First Audit

The first audit sets the tone, and the fee, for every year after it.

A first-year audit has no prior audited balances to lean on, so your auditor has to get comfortable with your opening balances too. For a lot of first-year companies, that is the biggest surprise of the whole process. The second is finding out that "well-prepared" means something different to your auditor than it does to you.

Zeroed-In Consulting gets companies audit-ready. PP&Co performs the audit. In this session, Joe walks through what actually happens in a first-year audit, from client acceptance and planning to risk assessment and walkthroughs. Kyle covers the prep on the company side: an organized PBC list, a reconciled balance sheet, technical memos written before fieldwork, and a close that keeps the year-end numbers from moving.

For calendar-year companies, interim audit work happens in November and December. We will cover what can be tested now, what has to wait for year-end, and when interim is not worth doing.

What You'll Walk Away With

One hour, two sides of the same audit. We will cover:

  • What auditors need and look for in a first-year audit, starting with opening balances
  • Audit vs. review, and why the first audit sets the fee for every year after it
  • The first-year problem areas we see most: cutoff, SaaS revenue, equity, stock compensation, and missing contracts
  • What a well-prepared company looks like to an auditor, and how to get there before fieldwork
  • Whether interim testing makes sense for your company this year-end
  • How auditors use AI today, and what they will ask if your team uses it

Whether your first audit starts next quarter or you just finished one, you will leave knowing what your auditor needs and what to fix before fieldwork starts.
